INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WORLD INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
On International Day of World Indigenous Peoples Labor stands with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to recommit to delivering a greater say in issues that affect their lives.
And the next step is enshrining an Indigenous voice in our Constitution. Because for too long our first Australians have been excluded from the nation's birth certificate.
Labor is committed to advancing the recommendations from the Uluru Statement and the Referendum Council’s report. Labor has clearly outlined a bipartisan parliamentary process to make this recognition a reality.
Labor calls on all parliamentarians to support Constitutional Recognition, as we await the response from the Government on establishing a Joint Parliamentary Committee to advance this process.
We are determined to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a voice in the Constitution, and we’re committed to continuing to hear Indigenous voices in the Parliament itself.
Labor is proud of its Indigenous parliamentarians Senator Patrick Dodson, Hon. Linda Burney MP and Senator Malarndirri McCarthy who bring a depth of understanding and lived experience to the issues that face our first Australians.
Today is also a reminder that we still have more to do. We must continue to deliver practical, community-driven measures to help close the gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in every part of our national life: from education and employment to justice, housing and health.
Labor is committed to working in a bipartisan way, striving for the best possible outcomes in partnership Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
